International Women’s Day

Next March 8th will be commemorate the “International Women’s Day” in Spain. Every year I’m invited to paticipate in some exhibition related with this event, and this one isn’t an exception.

The painting bellow will be my contribution.

It represents a happy Young woman with a heavy tool… But things are not what they seem. The pick is obviously feeble, indeed it’s made out of paper, not even plastic; and the woman is alone. She’s happy, she hasn’t started yet.

This image is related with a dream I use to have: I will use a tool, or it could be the  wheel of a car or a machine or such on, but I cannot because it's soft or mistmached. And no matter how hard I try, it’s completely useless. A nightmare in fact.

The painting is about the ingenuous expectations of the youth, the lack of real opportunities and how our society doesn’t prepare us to face the rigours of real life. And of course women always get the worst of it.

El próximo 8 de marzo se celebra el día internacional de la mujer en España. Todos los años me piden alguna obra para participar en alguna exposición relacionada con esta efeméride, y este año no es una excepción.

La pintura de arriba es mi contribución.

Representa a una mujer joven, feliz, que sujeta una herramienta pesada... Pero las cosas no son lo que parecen. El pico es claramente débil, de hecho es de papel, ni siquiera de plástico; y la mujer está sola. Ella es feliz, todavía no ha empezado.

La imagen se relaciona con un sueño que suelo tener. Voy a usar una herramienta, o puede ser también un volante de un vehículo o una máquina o algo así, pero no puedo, porque es blanda o está mal ensamblada. Y no importa el empeño que ponga, es completamente inútil. Es una pesadilla, de hecho.

La pintura trata de las ingenuas expectativas de la juventud, la falta de oportunidades reales y de cómo nuestra sociedad no nos prepara para enfrentarnos a los rigores de la vida real. Y por supuesto, las mujeres siempre se llevan la peor parte.

NEWS, “Lo hace porque te quiere” and more

I’m very pleased to inform about two interesting exhibitions in Spain.

Among the artists of the second exhibition I have good friends, I wish them success.

CIRL BUNTING

This time I felt like painting a bird from my country, I mean a native one. The cirl bounting breeds in South Europe (also in Spain) and the male is colorful enough to catch my attention. I can't say I'm systematic when choosing, but I'm optimistic and so I think all the species would have their turn some time, this is a whole life project.

Fortunately Miguel Montoro, a tireless  Spanish photographer and a friend, knows well this species and has photographed it several times, so the choice has been easy.

Esta vez tenía ganas de pintar un pájaro de mi país, me refiero a una especie nativa. El escribano soteño se cría en todo el Sur de Europa (también en España) y es bastante colorido como para llamar mi atención. No puedo decir de mí mismo que sea sistemático al elegir, pero soy optimista y pienso que tarde o temprano todas las especies de aves tendrán su oportunidad, este es un proyecto a muy largo plazo.

Afortunadamente Miguel Montoro, un infatigable fotografo español y un amigo, conoce bien a esta especie y la ha fotografiado en varías ocasiones, así la elección ha sido fácil.

TICKELL'S BLUE FLYCATCHER

And now a new bird from the rain forest.

Since long I'd planned to paint a couple of the same species, but isn't easy to find the suitable photos. You need male and female, but with a similar light, in a similar place, from a similar angle....

At last I found them and they are by Zul Ya from Malaysia. Zul is a friend. He's a wild life lover and so he's fortunate to live in Malaysia. I'm his follower so I learn a lot about the birds of this country in his blog. If you're interested follow this link:

Y ahora un nuevo pájaro del bosque tropical.

Desde hace tiempo tenía intención de pintar una pareja de la misma especie, pero no es fácil encontrar las fotos adecuadas. Se necesita un macho y una hembra, pero con una luz similar, en un lugar similar, tomados desde un ángulo parecido...

Finalmente las encontré y su autor es Zul Ya de Malasia. Zul es un enamorado de la fauna salvaje y tiene la suerte de vivir en Malasia. Soy su seguidor y así aprendo mucho sobre los pájaros de su país. Si está interesado siga este enlace:

BLACK BIRDS

Black is a difficult colour for painters. Black tends to dirt too easily other colours when mixed together and uses to attract more attention than desired. Some artists try to avoid it and even some masters recommend don't use it at all.

I'm just the opposite, black fascinates me.

Black represents taking over risks, the attraction of the void, a fantastic background that makes any dull colour seems bright .... So painting a blackbird doesn't frighten me, on the contrary, it's a pleasure.

Moreover, the viewer is always in my mind when I'm painting and black birds don't use to be very popular. So I must hold myself.

But this time I've found a black bird that might please everybody,  a rosy starling (sturnus roseus) that shows a rare but beutiful strong contrast of colours.

El negro es un color difícil para los pintores. Tiende a ensuciar con facilidad a los demás colores cuando se usa en las mezclas y suele atraer mucho la atención. Algunos artistas intentan evitarlo y algunos maestros recomiendan no usarlo en absoluto.

Para mí es todo lo contrario, el negro me fascina.

El color negro representa asumir riesgos, la atracción del vacio, un fondo maravilloso que hace parecer brillante al más apagado de los colores.... Por tanto, pintar un pájaro negro no me asusta, por el contrario, es un placer.

Por otra parte, siempre tengo presente al espectador cuando pinto y los pájaros negros no suelen ser muy populares. Por eso debo contenerme.

Pero esta vez he encontrado un pájaro negro que debería gustar a todo el mundo, un estornino rosado (sturnus roseus) que muestra un fuerte contraste de colores, poco frecuente pero bonito.

He trabajado a partir de una fotografía de Jiri Bohdal. La encontré por casualidad, pero gracias a ella he conocido la página de este artista, una página estupenda donde ver muchas grandes fotos. Usted puede incluso comprar alguna de ellas en alta resolución si es su deseo (recomendado). Aquí dejo el enlace, si usted es un amante de la naturaleza seguro que la disfruta.

NEWS

The exhibition "Lo hace porque te quiere" will be again on view. This time in the Art Center of Alcobendas, December 2 -12 (see the picture for more information).

New artist have been incorporated, as for instance the famous Ouka Lele and the promising Ra Dvran.



La exposición "Lo hace porque te quiere" podrá visitarse una vez más. Esta vez en el Centro de Arte de Alcobendas, del 2 al 12 de diciembre (Ver la imagen para más información).

Se han incorporado nuevos artistas, como por ejemplo la famosa Ouka Lele y la joven promesa Ra Dvran.

A BIZARRE PROJECT

2014 is the 4th centenary of the death of El Greco (famous Greek painter who lived and worked in Toledo-Spain). So there will be scores of related events all over Spain.

I've been invited to take part in one of them, but it turns to be a really bizarre project. The project is carried out by "La Carpa - artists and creators from Getafe", a society  to which I'm proud to be a member.

Let's imagine 42 different artists with 42 different styles painting a single work. The subject is an enormous painting by El Greco, "The burial of the Count Orgaz"; and the aim is to obtain a same size version of it (180 x 140 inches). Therefore we have divided the whole image in 42 equal parts and every artist has to make his own version of one of them. At the end, we will fit together the parts, as in a giant puzzle.

A real madness.

The outcome will be exhibited in the Cathedral of Getafe next year.

I've just finished my part and I show it bellow. Of course I'd like to share the whole project so I will keep you informed.

2014 es el IV centenario de la muerte de EL Greco (un famoso pintor griego que vivió y trabajó en Toledo - España). Por tanto, va a haber muchos eventos relacionades por toda España.

He sido invitado a participar en uno de ellos, pero ha resultado ser un proyecto de verdad bizarro. El proyecto lo lleva a cabo "La Carpa - artistas y creadores de Getafe", una sociedad a la que tengo el orgullo de pertenecer.

Imaginaros 42 artistas diferentes, con 42 estilos diferentes, que pintan un sólo cuadro. El tema es una pintura enorme de El Greco, "El entierro del Conde Orgaz", y el propósito es hacer una versión al mismo tamaño (4,6 x 3,6 metros). Para ello, se ha dividido la imagen en 42 partes iguales y cada artista debe pintar su versión de una de ellas. Al final las juntaremos todas como si se tratara de un puzzle gigantesco.


Una auentica locura.

El resultado se expondrá en la Catedral de Getafe el próximo año.

Yo acabo de terminar mi parte que muestro más arriba. Por supuesto me gustaría compartir el projecto completo, así que os mantendré informados.
