Abstract paintings

When I finished my degree in Fine Arts, I worked mainly abstract and conceptual art. Nevertheless I've always done figurative painting, even in those days, because I didn't want to loose my skills.

I got very good chriticism in those days, but at some point I considered that it was a very endogamic world and that I wanted to reach a wider audience. Then I take Daniel Dvran as my artistic name and started running my blog about figurative painting in acrylics.

Some people has been asking me to show some of my former abstract paintings and today I'm going to satisfy them.

Here there are two examples, both experimental works, in acrylics too. They are surfaces where painting and colours are the main characters, in them some actions develope, but they are only related to painting as a substance, to its behavior and properties. The outcome tries to suggest and enless, deep and colourfull busy-space, this way I look for a door to the experience of the sublime.

Aleph / 27.5 x 39 inches acrylic on wood / Acrílica sobre madera 70 x 100 cm

Metamorphosis / Acrylic on wood / Metamorfósis / Acrílica sobre madera

No obstante, siempre he hecho pintura figurativa, incluso en aquellos días, porque siempre he querido conservar mis habilidades.

BLACK-FRONTED NUNBIRD

The subject of my last picture is a blue bird.  From the beginning of the first bird series I've been fascinated by blue birds, for they are so rare in Europe and especially in Spain. We tend to associate this colour to tropical birds and indeed this Nunbird is found in the moist lowland forests of South America.

When I conceived my first bird series, I thought to begin with a limited geographical area that would have been of course Spain or South Europe or even the UK (this last one as an homage to the extraordinary bird illustrators born in this country). But as an artist, I first tried to imagine the result in all and I immediately I noticed that there would have been a very unbalanced scheme of colour because of lack of blue. So I decided to choose my models by its colour although trying to alternate the continent of origin.

The reference photo is by Jose Hernandez, a North American traveller and it was taken in the rain forest of Ecuador. I found it in his blog and I encourage everybody to visit it, you'll find more interesting photos and clever writing. Here is the link:

The subject of my latest work is El Greco again. I was challenged to participate in an exhibition about that matter and, of course, I considered it a personal dare.

Most of the other invited artists have made versions after some work by El Greco, but I prefered a different way. The pictures by El Greco make me feel uneasy, they are dark and it seems as if there were not enough air, they are rather claustrophobic.

Here I show my alternative view, I hope you'll enjoy it.

International Women’s Day

Next March 8th will be commemorate the “International Women’s Day” in Spain. Every year I’m invited to paticipate in some exhibition related with this event, and this one isn’t an exception.

The painting bellow will be my contribution.

It represents a happy Young woman with a heavy tool… But things are not what they seem. The pick is obviously feeble, indeed it’s made out of paper, not even plastic; and the woman is alone. She’s happy, she hasn’t started yet.

This image is related with a dream I use to have: I will use a tool, or it could be the  wheel of a car or a machine or such on, but I cannot because it's soft or mistmached. And no matter how hard I try, it’s completely useless. A nightmare in fact.

The painting is about the ingenuous expectations of the youth, the lack of real opportunities and how our society doesn’t prepare us to face the rigours of real life. And of course women always get the worst of it.

“Where  are you going with a paper pick?”, 16 x 20 inches, acrylic on Wood / “¿Dónde vas con un pico de papel?”, 40 x 50 cm, acrílico sobre madera.

CIRL BUNTING

This time I felt like painting a bird from my country, I mean a native one. The cirl bounting breeds in South Europe (also in Spain) and the male is colorful enough to catch my attention. I can't say I'm systematic when choosing, but I'm optimistic and so I think all the species would have their turn some time, this is a whole life project.

Fortunately Miguel Montoro, a tireless  Spanish photographer and a friend, knows well this species and has photographed it several times, so the choice has been easy.

Be sure to take a look!

TICKELL'S BLUE FLYCATCHER

And now a new bird from the rain forest.

Since long I'd planned to paint a couple of the same species, but isn't easy to find the suitable photos. You need male and female, but with a similar light, in a similar place, from a similar angle....

At last I found them and they are by Zul Ya from Malaysia. Zul is a friend. He's a wild life lover and so he's fortunate to live in Malaysia. I'm his follower so I learn a lot about the birds of this country in his blog. If you're interested follow this link:

This blog is worth a thorough visit.

Zul, terima kasih kerana gambar.
