EXHIBITION IN THE CATHEDRAL OF GETAFE - NEWS

My picture "Mary Magdalene" (see post of the 30th of May) will be part of an exhibition taht will take place in Maria Magdalena Cathedral (in the City of Getafe, in Spain).

The opening wil be on the first of October and will last till the first of December. The exposition will consist of 32 works of art by different artists.

Mi cuadro sobre María Magdalena (ver el post del 30 de mayo) formará parte de una exposoción que se va a celebrar en la Catedral de Sta. María Magdalena (en Getafe, España).

La inauguración será el 1 de octubre y permanecerá abierta al público hasta el 1 de diciembre.

La exposición se va a componer de 32 obras de diferentes autores.

MAGICAL MOMENTS

This is my last work with toys. I actually started it a year ago, but I was not convinced and left it leaning against a wall. Yesterday I went back, made some corrections an this is the outcome.

In this still life I chose only objects that were made of plastic.

I try to recover some childhood memories, moments of innocence when we could mix all kinds of figures and build beautiful stories. I think we tend to lose this ability. We lose the flexibility to mix different things, with different scales and qualities. At the end we are doomed to lose the ability to innovate and imagine.

I only want the viewer to recover some of those magical moments.         //

Este es mi último trabajo con juguetes. En realidad lo empecé hará un año, pero no quedé convencido y lo dejé apoyado contra una pared. Ayer lo retomé, hice algunas correcciones y este es el resultado.

Para esta naturaleza muerta elegí sólo objetos de plástico.

Intento recuperar algunos recuerdos de la infancia, momentos de inocencia en los que podíamos mezclar todo tipo de figuras y construir bellas historias. Creo que tendemos a perder esta capacidad, la flexibilidad necesaria para mezclar cosas distintas, con diferentes escalas y calidades. Al final estamos abocados a ver mermada nuestra habilidad para imaginar e innovar.

Mi único deseo es que el espectador recupere también alguno de estos momentos mágicos.

SUMMER LEISURE AND CHILD DRAWING

In summer I usually stop my projects, specially if I travel. This time hasn't been a exception, as I have gone to Cantabria (in the North of Spain).

On these occasions I like to carry a minimum painting set consisting of some brushes and two acrylic colours, black and white.

I enjoy myself painting simple subjects, executed in grisaille, and from time to time I get something interesting. Here I show one of the last.

En verano suelo aparcar mis projectos, especialmente si viajo. Esta vez no ha sido una excepción, pues he ido a Cantabria (en el Norte de España).

En estas ocasiones me gusta llevar un equípo mínimo de pintura compuesto por algunos pinceles y dos colores acrílicos, blanco y negro.

Disfruto entonces pintando objetos simples, realizados como grisallas, y de vez en cuando consigo algo interesante. Aquí muestro una de las últimas.

And while I was painting, my kid was drawing.

When I can, I take my son to see some exhibitions. He likes and recognizes Dali and Picasso. So I feel proud and think he's turning into a genius when he gets a picture plenty of rhythm and movement.

The picture below is a good example. I think this picture might remember a Picasso drawing. Mightn't it?

Y mientras yo estaba pintando, mi hijo estaba dibujando.

Cuando puedo, llevo a mi hijo a ver exposiciones. A él le gusta y reconoce a Dalí y Picasso. Por ello, me siento orgulloso y pienso que se está convirtiendo en un genio cuando consigue una imagen llena de ritmo y movimiento.

El dibujo de abajo es un buen ejemplo.

With this work I close the first chapter of the Bird Series. Of course there will be more, but I need a period of reflection and perhaps I will make a few changes. I'll see.

Today is the turn of an African bird that breeds across Senegal, Gambia and Congo. I made it from a photo taken in Gambia by Nigel  Blake, an indefatigable traveler, photographer and also a blogger. He has truly interesting pictures so I heartily recommend a visit to his blog:

Thanks to people like him, those who love nature can enjoy memorable images. Nigel has also published a book that collects his experiences and photographies of birds in Gambia (The Gambia, a brief birdwatching guide). A little gem that will surely delight birdwatching enthusiasts.

Con este trabajo cierro el primer capítulo de la serie. Por supuesto habrá más, pero ahora necesito un período de reflexión y quizá haga algunos cambios. Ya veré.

Hoy es el turno de un pájaro africano que se cría entre Senagal, Gambia y el Congo. Lo he realizado a partir de una fotografía tomada en Gambia por Nigel Blake, un viajero infatigable, fotógrafo y también bloguero. Gracias a personas como él, los que amamos la naturaleza podemos disfrutar de imagenes memorables. Nigel ha publicado también un libro que recoge sus experiencias fotografías de aves en Gambia. Una pequeña joya que seguramente hará las delicias de los aficionados a la observación de aves.  

IT ONLY TOOK ME NINE YEARS

When I show any of my paintings isn't unusual that someone asks me "How long it took?". I use to answer politely though I think that only matters what the painting actually looks like, not how long it took or how hard you had to work to make it.

For instance, I started the painting shown below nine years ago, and I've just finished it yesterday. So it only took me nine years.

Of course, in the mean time I've created other works and this picture has spent lots of days (even months) back against a wall. But somehow it has been always in my thoughts.

In other matters, the subject is a Roseate Spoonbill, so called for the beak shape. It was so long ago that I'm not sure about the origin of the picture or the author (maybe not even existed Google). I've only kept a spoiled photocopy that helped me to finish the job. Really sorry I can not name the photographer.

Cuando enseño alguno de mis cuadros no es raro que alguien me pregunte "¿Cuánto tiempo te ha llevado pintarlo?". Suelo responder cortesmente pero creo que lo verdaderamente importante es el aspecto final de la pintura, no el tiempo que consumió o lo complicado que resultó.

Por ejemplo, empecé la pintura que muestro más arriba hace nueve años y la terminé ayer mismo. Por tanto he tardado sólo nueve años.

Por supuesto, mientras tanto he realizado otras obras y este cuadro ha pasado muchos días (incluso meses) vuelto contra la pared. Pero de alguna manera lo he tenido siempre presente.

Pasando a otra cosa, el asunto es una Espátula Rosada, así llamada por la forma del pico. De otra parte, la empecé hace tanto tiempo que no recuerdo el origen de la foto que utilicé ni su autor (creo que no existía ni Google). Sólo he conservado una fotocopia deteriorada que me ha ayudado a terminar el trabajo. De verdad lamento no poder citar al fotógrafo.

MY FIRST PET PORTRAIT

Summer time in Spain deters acrylic painting practice. Due to high temperatures quick drying acrylics become ultra quick drying. In addition there are scores of irksome duties as are going to the beach, staying up late and so on.

I keep on, but not as fast as I would like. So I suposse is time to show some old works.

Today's pictures are my first and second pet portraits.

They both were made from photos by Pepe Pascual, a good friend of mine and the owner of the cocker spaniel. He isn't a skillful photographer (not even try to be), but frequently a not very good photo gives more freedom to the painter. So I accepted the challenge as full of spirit as the month of May and I've never stopped painting pets.

El verano español dificulta enormemente la práctica de la pintura acrílica. Debido a las altas temperaturas, el secado rápido característico de la pintura acrílica pasa a ser ultrarápido. Además, hay montones de obligaciones fastidiosas como ir a la playa, trasnochar, etc.

Yo continúo, pero no tan rápido como quisiera. Por ello, supongo que es el momento de mostrar algunas obras ya antiguas.

Las pinturas de hoy son mi primer y segundo retrato de mascotas.

Ambas fueron hechas a partir de fotos de Pepe Pascual, un buen amigo y el dueño del cocker spaniel. No es un gran fotógrafo, ni intenta serlo, pero con mucha frecuencia una foto no muy buena le da más libertad al pintor. Así que acepté el desafío lleno de entusiasmo y ya nunca he dejado de pintar mascotas.
