IT ONLY TOOK ME NINE YEARS

When I show any of my paintings isn't unusual that someone asks me "How long it took?". I use to answer politely though I think that only matters what the painting actually looks like, not how long it took or how hard you had to work to make it.

For instance, I started the painting shown below nine years ago, and I've just finished it yesterday. So it only took me nine years.

Platalea Ajaja / Roseate Spoonbill / Espátula Rosada
18 x 11.7 inches acrylic on wood / Acrílico sobre madera 46 x 29,5 cm

Of course, in the mean time I've created other works and this picture has spent lots of days (even months) back against a wall. But somehow it has been always in my thoughts.

In other matters, the subject is a Roseate Spoonbill, so called for the beak shape. It was so long ago that I'm not sure about the origin of the picture or the author (maybe not even existed Google). I've only kept a spoiled photocopy that helped me to finish the job. Really sorry I can not name the photographer.

Por tanto he tardado sólo nueve años.

MY FIRST PET PORTRAIT

Summer time in Spain deters acrylic painting practice. Due to high temperatures quick drying acrylics become ultra quick drying. In addition there are scores of irksome duties as are going to the beach, staying up late and so on.

I keep on, but not as fast as I would like. So I suposse is time to show some old works.

Today's pictures are my first and second pet portraits.

They both were made from photos by Pepe Pascual, a good friend of mine and the owner of the cocker spaniel. He isn't a skillful photographer (not even try to be), but frequently a not very good photo gives more freedom to the painter. So I accepted the challenge as full of spirit as the month of May and I've never stopped painting pets.

STILL LIFE WITH FIGURES

Sometimes I feel like painting a still life and then toys , specially plastic figures, give me the opportunity of elaborating little allegories. In addition, the spectators' imagination uses to be stimulated because some figures in a context always suggest a story.

This time I will show one of this still lifes. I made it two years ago, but it has been lost (and unphotographed) for the last year. Happily I found it yesterday.

Most of my old masters surely should say that the saturated colours makes it seem gaudy or even naive. I don't agree, of course. The colour scheme here possesses a strong significance, since my main aim was to recover the colours of my childhood.

Acrylic on canvas 19.5 x 15.5 inches/ Acrílica sobre lienzo 50 x 40 cm

BIRD SERIES VII

I started the bird series a year ago and, believe me or not, the first bird I wanted to paint was a robin. I had to establish some limits. I decided to set out with small size birds (not more than 5.5 or 6 inches) and to alternate the different continents.

The first one had to be a European one, and I thought a robin could be a very representative one. And how to choose the reference photos?. Quite simple, I had to feel seduced by it. But... by then I didn't found an appealing enough picture. So I chose other species and go on.

I forgot the subject and a month ago I realised that I had never used a photo by a Spanish author. I'm from Spaish, so I started to go over bird Spanish blogs, and there it was, the pretiest robin I've ever seen. And this way I met the author, Miguel Montoro, whose blog is worth one (and more than one) visit. The link:

Erithacus rubecula / Robin / Petirrojo

Another Pet Portrait

It's time for another pet portrait.

This time the sitter was a boston terrier and the client wanted a seascape background. This sort of commission always implies a lot of trouble.

First of all you need to agree very clearly on what it is they want you to make. In this case, ¿What did they mean with seascape? ¿A sunset? ¿Boats and palms?; And how much room for the portrait itself and for the seascape background?; and so on. Nevertheless, some talk and scores of sketches later I got mi mind around their expectations.

Boston terrier

But then I had to paint it and as Stapleton Kearns says, "The canid is always dead in those deals, and appears only in one out of focus photograph". In any case, at that time I really felt like painting it and I went on. Now I'm proud to have done it.

Mary Magdalen

Today I want to show my second time consuming project that have been distracting me from the Bird Series. The subject is Mary Magdalen, an important character in the Catholic tradition. I like this subject because I tnink somehow it is a homage to all the suffering women.

I can qualified this 59 x 59 inches acrylic on wooden as both a quick and a hard work. Quick for it takes me only three sessions of proper painting. But hard because of all the previous treatment that a wooden surfface needs. In addition I paint in a seventh floor flat and such a size didn't go into the elevator.

Mary Magdalen / María Magdalena

It's a dark picture too. I haven't used white paint except for the last strokes in the eyes highlights and the tear.

I wish it to be exhibited in a church. It doesn't up to me, though maybe I will manage. I'll keep you informed.
