Mary Magdalen

Today I want to show my second time consuming project that have been distracting me from the Bird Series. The subject is Mary Magdalen, an important character in the Catholic tradition. I like this subject because I tnink somehow it is a homage to all the suffering women.

I can qualified this 59 x 59 inches acrylic on wooden as both a quick and a hard work. Quick for it takes me only three sessions of proper painting. But hard because of all the previous treatment that a wooden surfface needs. In addition I paint in a seventh floor flat and such a size didn't go into the elevator.

It's a dark picture too. I haven't used white paint except for the last strokes in the eyes highlights and the tear. 

I wish it to be exhibited in a church. It doesn't up to me, though maybe I will manage. I'll keep you informed.

Hoy voy a mostrar el segundo de los proyectos que me ha estado distrayendo de la serie de los pájaros. El tema es María Magdalena, un personaje importante en la traición Católica. Me gusta este tema porque pienso que de alguna manera es un homenaje a las mujeres que sufren.

Puedo calificar este acrílico sobre madera de 150 x 150 cm como un trabajo rápido y duro. Rápido porque sólo me llevó tres sesiones de pintura propiamente dichas. Pero duro por todo el tratamiento previo que un soporte de madera requiere. Además, para colmo, pinto en un septimo piso y no cabe en el ascensor.

Es también una pintura oscura. No he usado pintura blanca, salvo por los últimos toques en el brillo de los ojos y la lágrima.

Me gustaría que fuera expuesto en una iglesia, pero no depende sólo de mi, aunque quizá lo consiga. Os mantendré informados.

BIRD SERIES VI

Those who don't live in a tropical country use conceive a romantic idea of what is the jungle. The Jungle, we might think, is adventure, biodiversity, etc. But when we experienced it, our perception change completely. Jungle turns to be danger, snakes, hot, still water, disease, mosquitoes,... Indeed to appreciate and admire it it's necessary to meet another sort of person, someone who feels the jungle is somehow his home.

One of these men is Nilo Arribas Jr., from the Philippines and he is an artist and so he can teach us a lot about the jungle birds of his country. His photos  are really worth seeing. The quality of his works, the serenity of his pictures, tell us without any doubt Nilo is a great natural world lover.

Aquellos que no vivimos en un país tropical solemos concebir una idea romántica de lo que es la jungla. La jungla, podríamos pensar, es aventura, biodiversidad, etc. Pero cuando llegamos a experimentarla, nuestra percepción cambia totalmente, la jungla pasa a ser peligro, serpientes, calor, aguas estancadas, enfermedades, mosquitos.... De hecho, para llegar a apreciarla y admirarla es necesario juntarse con otro tipo de personas, con alguien que siente que de alguna manera la jungla es su hogar.

Uno de estos hombres es Nilo Arribas Jr., de Filipinas, que es un artista y que por ello, puede enseñarnos mucho sobre la avifauna de la jungla de su país. Merece la pena ver sus fotos. La calidad de su trabajo, la serenidad de sus imágenes, nos dicen que Nilo, sin duda, es un gran amante de la naturaleza.

El último pájaro que he pintado, de hecho, lo ha sido a partir de una de las obras de Nilo. Y, además, yo no hubiera conocido nunca a este pájaro si no me hubiera encontrado con las fotografías de Nilo en internet. Home sweet home

This is my very last painting. The subject is supposed to be "domestic violence" and the size 13 x 13 inches (acrylic on board). My son, seven years old collaborated on the composition with me.

Maybe a short explanation is needed. As you can see it's titled "home sweet home" but the man is up, breathing free and happy, though the woman is down, crushed against the glass by the man and the sweets. To make this clear I've painted the girl with a down turned smile.

This work, obviously, has proved more time consuming than any painted bird, but not more difficult. Really the main trouble was to place so much detail in such a small size. I expect it will be exhibited soon, I'll keep you informed.

Homo sweet home  /  Hogar dulce hogar

Esta es mi última obra. El tema es "la violencia doméstica" y las dimensiones 33 x 33 cm (acrílico sobre cartón). Mi hijo, de siete años, colaboró conmigo en la composición del modelo.

Quizá sea necesaria una breve explicación. Como puede verse, se titula "hogar dulce hogar", pero el hombre está arriba, respirando libre y feliz, mientras que la mujer está abajo aplastada contra el vaso tanto por el peso del hombre, como por el de los "dulces" (caramelos). Para que se vea claro, he pintado a la chica con la sonrisa hacia abajo.

Esta obra, obviamente, me ha llevado más tiempo que cualquiera de los pájaros, pero no me ha resultado más difícil. En realidad, el principal problema ha sido colocar tanto detalle en tan poco espacio. Espero que sea expuesta en breve, os mantendré informados.

BIRD SERIES V

The internet is plenty of lovers of the natural world and thanks to this blog I am meeting some of them.

Esteban Argerich, an Argentinian photographer, is the last one. Esteban is the author of hundreds of fantastic bird photos, and the author of the picture I have use for this last work. I absolutely recommend nis page:

not so much for the variety of the species, but because the surprising quality of his pictures. Argerich's fondness for properly done photos is remarkable.

As usual my painting is a 40 x 30 cm acrylic on cardboard. The bird lives in South America, in the area from South Brazil to South Argentina. A pretty little bird.

Internet está lleno de amantes de la naturaleza y gracias a este blog estoy conociendo a algunos de ellos.

Esteban Argerich, fotógrafo de Argentina, ha sido el último que conocido. Esteban es el autor de cientos de fantásticas fotografías sobre aves y es el autor de la última fotografía que he utilizado para esta pintura. Recomiendo vivamente una visita a su página, este es el enlace:

no sólo por la variedad de especies que muestra, sino por por la sorprendente calidad de sus imágenes. Es muy de destacar el gusto de Argerich por las fotos bien hechas.

Como de costumbre, mi pintura es un acrílico sobre cartón de 40 x 30 cm. Este pájaro vive en Sudamérica, en el área comprendida entre el Sur de Brasil y el Sur de Argentina. Un pájaro realmente bonito.

BIRD SERIES IV

I'm engaged in two challenging but time consuming projects at present. Two paintings aimed to two collective exhibitions in Madrid (Spain).

The first purpose of this blog was to make a permanent on-line exhibition, and many of my recent works are thought for this. But I reckon I can't give up conventional (off-line) exhibitions. They are occasions for confront other artists and good chances to reach a bigger audience.

So I'm sorry to say that my posts might become less frequent by the moment. Nevertheless I expect to return to a normal state in two or three months. Of course I will report about this exhibitions and I will continue posting.

In any case, I want to show my last bird: a chesnut sided warbler. As always this is a 40 x 30 cm acrylic on cardboard.

Ahora mismo estoy comprometido con dos proyectos muy interesantes, pero que requieren mucha dedicación. Se trata de dos pinturas destinadas a dos exposiciones colectivas en Madrid.

El propósito inicial de este blog era realizar poco a poco una exposición on-line permanente propia, y muchos de mis trabajos recientes están pensados para esto. Pero me doy cuenta de que no puedo renunciar a las exposiciones convencionales (fuera de la red). Son buenas ocasiones para competir con otros artistas y para alcanzar una mayor audiencia.

Por ello, lamento decir que mis posts pueden hacerse menos frecuentes de momento. No obstante, espero recuperar la normalidad en dos o tres meses. Por supuesto, informaré sobre estas exposiciones colectivas y voy a continuar posteando.

En cualquier caso, quiero enseñar mi último pájaro: una reinita de Pensilvania. Como siempre, se trata de un acrílico sobre cartón de 30 x 40 cm.

BIRD SERIES III (WITH AN EXPERIMENT)

I want to start this post with a recent experiment. I was looking for a different way to draw twigs and feathers when I found a bird picture in a postage stamp. The usage of plain colours and the approach to pop style seemed to me simply marvellous, then I went over a bird stamps collection and decided to try a similar work. The outcome can be seen in the picture below. 

Quiero empezar este post con un experimento reciente. Estaba buscando una forma diferente de dibujar las ramitas y las hojas cuando casualmente vi la imagen de un pájaro en un sello de correos. El uso de colores planos y la similitud con el estilo pop me parecieron simplemente maravillosos, por lo que me puse a revisar una colección de "sellos de pájaros" y decidí intentar algo parecido. El resultado es el que se puede ver en las dos primeras imagenes.

This time the "sitters" are a couple of collared aracaris ( pteroglossus torquatus ) that I've painted from photos by Erick Gauger ( www.notesfromtheroad.com ) and Kathy & Sam. In addition I've included a butterfly in order to improve the colour scheme. It is an   17.9 x 14.8 acrylic on canvas.

En esta ocasión "los modelos" son un par de tucancillos collarejos ( pteroglossus torquatus ) que he pintado a partir de fotos de Erick Gauger ( www.notesfromtheroad.com ) y Kathy & Sam. He incluido además una mariposa para mejorar el esquema de color. Se trata de un acrílico sobre lienzo de   38 x 46 cm.

Inspired by this previous work next I took up again the Bird Series and did the picture below. This time is a bird from Malay Peninsula. I've painted it from some photos by Zul Ya Birder  ( http://zurkanain.blogspot.com.es ). And thanks to his page I've discovered a great deal of different fascinating tropical birds that are unknown in Europe (or at least in Spain). I expect that many of them will soon be included in my bird series.

Inspirado por esta experiencia previa, a continuación, retomé la Bird Series y realicé la obra que muestro en las dos siguientes imágenes. Esta vez es un pájaro de la Península de Malasia y lo he pintado a partir de fotos de Zul Ya Birder ( http://zurkanain.blogspot.com.es ), un fotógrafo de aquella zona. Y gracias a su página, he descubierto una montón de aves tropicales que son casi desconocidas en Europa (o al menos en España). Espero incluir pronto muchas de ellas en esta serie.

THE RISK OF MISTAKE

Someone asked if I have ever painted a cat, and of course I have. So I'd like to show a pair of examples.

I need to feel challenged to start a new work. I hate repetitive work and I like art precisely because of dare.

Routine means security and challenge means risk, then I suppose I love risk. When I started these two pet portraits, I had just painted more than five pet portraits in a row, and I felt like doing something different.

So, in the first one, I chose an orange background, in part because it seemed to me the most difficult starting point and in part because I had never done such a thing. The outcome can be seen below.

Alguien me ha preguntado si había pintado alguna vez un gato y, por supuesto, la respuesta es sí. Por ello me gustaría enseñar un par de ejemplos.

Para empezar una nueva obra, necesito que esta suponga un desafío. Odio el trabajo repetitivo y adoro el arte precisamente por lo que tiene de reto.

La rutina es seguridad y un desafío supone un riesgo, por ello, supongo que amo el riesgo. Cuando me propuse empezar estas dos obras, acababa de pintar más de cinco retratos de mascotas seguidos, y me apetecía hacer algo diferente.

Por ello, en el primer cuadro, elegí un naranja como color de fondo; en parte por que me parecía la forma más difícil de empezar y en parte, también, porque nunca había hecho algo así. El resultado puede verse en las dos imagenes de arriba.

In the second portrait I tried not a technical dare but some sort of joke. My aim was to "disguise" a domestic cat as a bobcat.

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed both of them.

En el segundo retrato me planteé un reto de tipo menos técnico, más bien se trató de una broma. Mi objetivo fue "disfrazar" un gato doméstico de modo que pareciera un lince.

En pocas palabras, disfruté mucho con ambos trabajos.
