THE RISK OF MISTAKE

Someone asked if I have ever painted a cat, and of course I have. So I'd like to show a pair of examples.

I need to feel challenged to start a new work. I hate repetitive work and I like art precisely because of dare.

Routine means security and challenge means risk, then I suppose I love risk. When I started these two pet portraits, I had just painted more than five pet portraits in a row, and I felt like doing something different.

So, in the first one, I chose an orange background, in part because it seemed to me the most difficult starting point and in part because I had never done such a thing. The outcome can be seen below.

In the second portrait I tried not a technical dare but some sort of joke. My aim was to "disguise" a domestic cat as a bobcat.

In a nutshell, I really enjoyed both of them.

Bird Series II

The pictures below continue the Bird Series.

This time I've painted two lovely and colourful birds. They both are very popular in their countries: the north cardinal in North America and the superb fairy wren in Australia. The first one has even a modest but symbolic role in "Sleepy Hollow", the Tim Burton's film.

Pet portraits I

These two "pet portraits" are part of a series destined for a portraiter's portfolio some years ago. I'll be posting most of these images.

The first one, titled "Chihuahua" found home, so I'll likely not see it as much as I'd like. But I keep the second one and it contains one of my first birds, a blackburnian warbler, also known as setophaga fusca. Such a beautiful bird deserves a more detailed picture, doesn't it?.

Tey both are painted with acrylics on hardwood.

Bird Series I

This is the beginning of a bird series of paintings.

There are over 10000 species of birds and life is long, so I hope to draw many of them.

These pictures are inspired in the work of 19th-century illustrators.

I used acrylic paints on acid-free cardboard primed with gesso. The size of each cardboard is 40 x 30 cm.
